Your donation will go to the Hallam Fund, which was established in 2016 to support students and applied research at Sheffield Hallam University. The Hallam Fund is administrated by the Development & Alumni Relations Office under the fundraising governance agreed with the University. All donations, including any Gift Aid, are allocated through a disbursement group to support priority areas of student support and research activity. All money goes directly to support programmes in the University which are helping transform lives.
We encourage you to donate via the online platform. This is the most efficient way to process your donation. However, we are able to take donations via cheque. You can also consider making a gift in your Will (please see below).
Yes. When you make your gift online, you’ll receive an email acknowledgement to let you know that your donation has been successfully processed. If you’re a UK taxpayer wishing to claim tax relief on your donation, this can also act as a receipt for tax purposes.
Later on, we’ll get in touch to let you know how your gift is being put to good use through our stewardship communications.
Yes. Please tick ‘I want to make this a regular direct debit’ on our donation form to sign up to give regular gifts to the Hallam Fund.
If you want to make a transformational difference to students through a significant donation, the team at Sheffield Hallam will be happy to speak to you. Please contact:

Thank you for considering leaving a gift to the University through your Will. Pledging a legacy costs you nothing today but will be incredibly valuable to the University in the years to come. Sheffield Hallam University is an exempt charity, which means that any gift left to us in your Will may help reduce the inheritance tax your estate will pay.
Legacies can be used to support many different aspects of the University's work, and we would be happy to discuss with you how you would like your gift to be used and potential wording. To speak to a member of the team in confidence about leaving a legacy, please contact:

Yes. Our commitment is to provide as much support and access to opportunities for our students as possible. As a graduate of the University, you can volunteer your time with your old department to support careers programmes through talks to current students and mentoring.
Your workplace may also be able to host students on short term placements or for student led projects, or help us place new graduates with you in critical job roles.
You can find out more by emailing alumni@shu.ac.uk.
Your gift can often be enhanced by a variety of tax breaks for charitable action.
Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that enables the University to claim tax relief on donations from UK taxpayers. We would encourage all eligible donors to take up this scheme to maximise their donation. For every £1 a UK taxpayer donates, 25p in reclaimed tax is added. This means that a £100 gift with Gift Aid is worth £125 to the University.
Please note that we will share relevant and necessary data with HM Revenue and Customs to enable us to reclaim the Gift Aid on your donation.
Donations from companies are not eligible for Gift Aid. However, the company can treat the gift as an allowable expense, making a saving on corporation tax. You may also be able to Match Fund your donation through a company scheme.
The University currently does not offer tax effective donation giving for the USA, Canada or Hong Kong.
Higher rate (40%) and Additional Rate (45%) taxpayers can also reclaim the difference between the basic rate and their top rate of tax on the value of their gift.
Example – how a donor paying UK tax at 40% could support a £9,000 scholarship at a net cost of £5,400: A gift of £7,200 grows to £9,000 when Gift Aid is added at the basic rate of tax. The donor can claim higher rate relief of £1,800 which is the difference between basic rate and higher rate tax. Once this relief is deducted from the original gift the net cost to the donor is reduced to £5,400. The scholarship could be funded outright with a gift of £7,200 or through three annual instalments of £2,400, which would be at a net cost of £1,500 per annum.
Example – how a donor paying UK tax at 45% could support a £9,000 scholarship at a net cost of £4,950. A gift of £7,200 grows to £9,000 when Gift Aid is added at the basic rate of tax. The donor can claim additional rate relief of £2,250 which is the difference between basic rate and additional rate tax. Once this relief is deducted from the original gift the net cost to the donor is reduced to £4,950.
The scholarship could be funded outright with a gift of £7,200 or through three annual instalments of £2,400, which would be at a net cost of £1,650 per annum.
Gift Aid can be added when you are completing your donation. If you already give, you can download the form to claim Gift Aid on any donations made in the previous four years.
